Jamaica's Progressive Tax System Explained
Jamaica uses a progressive income tax system, which means higher income is taxed at higher rates. The tax is applied in brackets — you only pay the higher rate on the portion of income that falls within that bracket, not on your entire income.
Tax-Free Threshold
J$1,500,096.00/yr
The first J$1,500,096 of annual income (J$125,008/month) is completely tax-free. Everyone gets this allowance.
25% Rate
J$1,500,096.01 – J$6,000,000.00
Income between J$1,500,097 and J$6,000,000 per year is taxed at 25%. This covers the next J$4,499,904.
30% Rate
Above J$6,000,000.00
Any income exceeding J$6,000,000 per year is taxed at the top rate of 30%. This only applies to the amount above J$6M.
Example: Salary of J$8,000,000/year
- First J$1,500,096 = J$0.00 tax (tax-free)
- Next J$4,499,904 (up to J$6M) = J$1,124,976.00 tax at 25%
- Remaining J$2,000,000 (above J$6M) = J$600,000.00 tax at 30%
- Total PAYE: J$1,724,976.00 — Effective rate: 21.56%
