Markup vs. Margin — What's the Difference?

Many Jamaican business owners use "markup" and "margin" interchangeably, but they are different calculations that can significantly affect your pricing and profit.

Markup %

How much you add on top of your cost.

((Selling - Cost) / Cost) × 100

Example: Cost J$1,000, Selling J$1,500 = 50% markup

Margin %

What percentage of the selling price is profit.

((Selling - Cost) / Selling) × 100

Example: Cost J$1,000, Selling J$1,500 = 33.33% margin

Why This Matters for Your Business

A common mistake: a business owner wants a 50% profit margin but applies a 50% markup instead. With a J$1,000 cost, a 50% markup gives a J$1,500 selling price (33.33% margin) — not the 50% margin they intended. To achieve a true 50% margin, the selling price needs to be J$2,000 (100% markup).

Don't Forget GCT

When setting prices in Jamaica, remember that the 15% GCT is charged on top of your selling price. Your markup and margin should be calculated before GCT. This calculator shows you the GCT-inclusive total so you know exactly what your customer pays.
